Tammie Hawkins – The Benefits of Majoring in Communication

Communications majors have a jump start on entering the business or corporate world due to their experience working with others in a business context. Most Communications programs at American universities emphasize hands-on, collaborative work and projects aimed at developing the basic skills that almost all successful business owners and executives have. Communications works to develop students’ abilities to share and collaborate across cultures and in real-world settings. Most Communications classes build students’ experience levels so that when they graduate with a Communications degree, they are able to put their lessons and experience to use within a business or corporate setting.

While business classes teach students the particulars of how businesses provide value and make money, Communications adds a human element to the business world. In addition to understanding how to communicate with superiors and those on the same corporate level, Communications instructors work with students to develop their ability to think critically, and understand on a very basic level how businesses grow and reach more clients. Many Communication programs place their students in situations in which they have to use their newfound communications skills in the real world through service-learning projects with local businesses. Communication majors come out of school with a degree and the experience to back it up.

Tammie Hawkins took the skills she learned at UCLA as a Communications major and started her own event planning company in Los Angeles. She says that her ability to network and grow her customer base comes from training in the Communications Department.
